I can’t believe it’s happening again! 2016 marks year number eight of my organization Rhythmically Speaking’s efforts to support and present original work in jazz and American vernacularly-inspired dance. A description for ya:

While the Rhythmically Speaking 2016 choreographers work within an array of aesthetics, they share a mutual appreciation for the poignant abilities of rhythm embodiment and jazz sensibilities to illuminate junctures of change and growth in life. Themes within the presented work include discovery, celebration, loss, protest and reflection, tied together by original audio vignettes that give insight into each choreographer’s understandings of how jazz, rhythm-driven and vernacularly-inspired movement ideas serve as rich grounds for exploring life’s turning points. The work you’ll see is by an exciting mix of local and national talent, including Minnesota-bred and now Oregon-based Cynthia Gutierrez-Garner and Pat Taylor, Artistic Director of Los-Angeles-based company Jazz Antiqua.

We’ve been recommended by Jazz 88.5 Radio, Citypages and the Star Tribune! We run at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis Thursday – Saturday, 8/18 – 8/20 at 7:30pm, with a 2pm show on Saturday 8/20 as well. I’d be honored to share this show with you; get your tickets and join us!
